If you haven’t read the first article in this playthrough series, you can find it here.

Disclaimer: Spoilers ahead for Act I of Baldur’s Gate 3

Our Underdark adventure was behind us. Nere severed head had been presented to the Sovereign, BOOOAL had been unmasked and defeated, and the Kuo-Toa declared my warlock Wilhelm as their new deity, Mahkloompah (divine, I know). All that was left was to finally take Lae’zel’s very patient suggestion to seek out the githyanki creche within the ruins of Rosymorn Monastery.

Here’s the thing: on my first playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3, I missed this questline entirely. I don’t know how. Maybe I got swept up in the main quest, maybe I ignored my quest log (you can’t judge me more than I’ve judged myself), but it wasn’t until I played a second time when I first met my partner, Jaye, that I discovered it. And wow, was I missing out.

View of Rosymorn Monastery in Baldur's Gate 3.

Perched high on the cliffs of the River Chionthar, the monastery and its surroundings are some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the entire game. Miles of Faerûn’s Western Heartlands, peaks cloaked in clouds, a massive waterfall tumbling down, and Rosymorn Monastery itself rising like a colossal temple into the sky. I still get lost in its twisting passages and hidden chambers, so once again, Jaye was on navigation duty as we descended into the creche’s secret depths towards one of my favorite story beats.

For most of Act I, she’s been unwavering in her devotion to Queen Vlaakith and certain that the Zaith’isk—a terrifying mix of technology and biology—is the surest way to purge the tadpole from our brains. That certainty shatters here. The machine nearly kills her before exploding, and the shock is enough to plant the first real seeds of doubt in her mind. Maybe the githyanki here aren’t loyal. Maybe Vlaakith isn’t infallible.

Lae'zel and the Zaith'isk machine.

It’s the beginning of one of the best character arcs in the game (and my personal favorite), and it’s the moment Lae’zel truly becomes three-dimensional—not just a zealot, but someone beginning to question everything she’s ever believed.

Also… we may have stolen a gith egg on the way out. My warlock will have to remember to pick up a Mother’s Day gift for Lae’zel once this is all over.

This part of Act I still feels new to me. Creche Y’llek and the monastery hold moments you won’t want to miss, especially if you love Lae’zel. Don’t skip it like I did the first time. You’ll thank yourself later.
