Disclaimer: Spoilers ahead for Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3

There’s no shortage of cinematic moments in Baldur’s Gate 3–the entire game is soaked in them. But Act 2? It turns the dial way up. The story accelerates, the stakes skyrocket, and you’re thrown into a whirlwind of new characters, stunning cutscenes, and world-shifting choices. Here are my top three favorite moments from Act 2.

Saving Thaniel

When you meet Oliver in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, there’s little to hint that he’s the dark half of Thaniel, an immortal spirit and the land’s living soul. This was once a radiant forest, alive with light and magic. Halsin remembers it that way, when he first befriended Thaniel. But the spirit is split in two: Oliver remains here in the Material Plane, while Thaniel is trapped in the Shadowfell. Reuniting them is key to breaking the curse.

Halsin opens a portal to save Thaniel

Cue one of the most memorable battles of the game. Halsin tears open a glowing portal to the Shadowfell–a swirling disc of gold and blue, leaves whipping through the air–and the fight is on. Shadow creatures swarm the ridge, desperate to snuff out the ritual before Halsin can return. After a few rounds of Evard’s Black Tentacles, Spirit Guardians, and Hunger of Hadar, Halsin steps through the light, clutching a small tiefling boy: Thaniel.

Thaniel

When the two halves rejoin, the land itself exhales. Light pierces the clouds, the great tree in town blooms once more, and centuries of darkness finally begin to lift.

Freeing the Nightsong

Deep in Shar’s Gauntlet, after puzzles, traps, and a showdown with her own shadow, Shadowheart discovers a revelation that changes everything: the Nightsong isn’t a relic. She’s a person–Aylin, a celestial aasimar who’s been imprisoned for centuries. At Aylin’s prison, Shadowheart casts aside her vows, hurling her spear into the abyss. She frees Aylin, helping her to feet, and realizing she just switched sides in one of the oldest and most brutal wars ever fought.

Shadowheart speaks to the Nightsong

What follows is one of Act 2’s most breathtaking moments. Aylin bursts free from the Shadowfell, clad in radiant armor and wings of light. She soars into the night sky like a falling star, raining divine fire down on the cultists at Moonrise Towers. On the surface, our allies glimpse only a streak of light–a comet, a miracle. But we know the truth: the tide of battle has just turned.

Ketheric Thorm and Myrkul

The Dead Three

Act 2’s finale is pure spectacle. Before the fight, a chilling cutscene reveals Orin, Gortash, and the Elder Brain itself as the armies of the Absolute begin to march. Then Ketheric hurls himself into a pit of necrotic energy, emerging as an avatar of Myrkul, god of death. The battle is brutal –practically impossible when I first played the game–but victory is so, so sweet. Myrkul dissolves into green mist, and Aylin claims her vengeance, crushing Ketheric’s mortal shell underfoot, her eyes blazing with divine fury.

Aylin kills Ketheric Thorm

It’s these moments that make Baldur’s Gate 3 feel less like a game and more like a living, breathing fantasy film–one where you’re not just watching the story unfold. You’re writing it.
