Why Solasta Has Some of Gaming’s Best DLCs

Solasta: Crown of the Magister really blew me out of the water. A reliable Dungeons & Dragons ruleset in an original and magical world. An epic quest. A party of four. It will remain at the top of my list for years. Even after we were done with the main campaign, I had a yearning to explore Solasta more. There was more to this world, and the Palace of Ice and Lost Valley expansions gave me hours upon hours of gameplay to continue my adventure. In fact, both were better (and about just as long, if not longer) than the main campaign.
Palace of Ice
The Palace of Ice DLC added new ancestries (Gnome and Tiefling), new environments, and a level-cap increase that let you upload your base game save file and continue with your original party. This DLC stood out for its setting: mountainous caverns, enormous dwarven cities, an elven glade, and an overarching landscape of snow and frost. There’s political intrigue as the Snow Alliance prepares to elect a new Speaker, the leader of the Pact of the Claw, whose role is essential in uniting their people against the Sorak threat. And there’s a brand new villain, Sessroth the Archreaver, a blood-red demon lord from the Demon Realms who has aligned himself with our nemesis, Sorr-Tarr.
What follows is full of epic battles, brand-new maps that constantly distracted me from what I was actually supposed to be doing, and an ending that made me gasp so hard I scared my dog. If you’re a winter person and into really hot demon daddies (who isn’t?), you are going to love this DLC.
Lost Valley
The Lost Valley DLC takes place in the lands of Dominion, which is ruled by a prick named Orenetis. You start at Level 1 on this one (no uploading from a past campaign) and the backstory of your party is that you are basically mercenaries guarding caravans that get lost and caught up in a serious revolution. This DLC also adds a brand new subclass for every class in the game. My partner, Jaye, played a Court Mage Wizard with a Sellsword background, meaning he had medium armor, a sword and shield, and could cast absolutely ridiculous shields and temporary health buffs on the party. I highly recommend trying this subclass!
Just like Palace of Ice, Lost Valley has a brand new map full of interesting locations and settings. The main city, Caer Hyfryd, is cloaked in plants and ivy, winding stone streets, and back alley locations you’ll have to wait to discover. It’s far more interesting than Caer Cyflen, and there’s much more to do. This DLC is saturated with new factions and side quests that force you to explore and back track, and it kept us busy for weeks.
If you haven’t played Solasta yet, this is your sign. With Solasta II right around the corner, now is the perfect time to dive in.
